Gilbert Castillo Wins 2016 Three-Minute Thesis Competition

Gilbert CastilloGraduate student Gilbert Castillo is the winner of the University’s 2016 Three-Minute Thesis Competition. His talk, “Glass-like Coatings for Polyesters,” describes the focus of his research. The work involves studying how the properties of traditional polyester can be modified and enhanced by adding glass-like coatings.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an international research communication competition that’s designed to challenge Ph.D. students to present a compelling oration on their thesis topic and its significance in just three minutes. The competition was started in 2008 at the University of Queensland, Australia, and has since spread to at least 170 universities in 17 countries around the world.

Gilbert, a member of Dr. Genzer’s and Dr. Dickey’s research group is a 5th year PhD student in Chemical Engineering. He received the GEM Corning fellowship in 2013 and has completed internships at both Corning, Inc. and Eastman Chemical Company during his graduate career.
