Professor Milad Abolhasani has received a 2021 Machine Learning in the Chemical Sciences & Engineering Award from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc. for his project, An Autonomous Robo-Fluidic Microprocessor: Machine Learning-Guided Synthesis Process Development of Quantum Dots.
Initiated in 2020, the Award provides funding “for innovative projects in any area of Machine Learning (ML) consistent with the Foundation’s broad objective to advance the chemical sciences and engineering. The Foundation anticipates that these projects will contribute new fundamental chemical insight and innovation in the field.”
Prof. Abolhasani’s research interests include accelerated materials development, autonomous synthesis, flow chemistry, microfluidics, and continuous nano-manufacturing. His research group studies fundamentals of process intensification and microscale transport phenomena using microreaction engineering concepts and principles of smart manufacturing.
Prof. Abolhasani is an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and a University Faculty Scholar. His NC State awards include being an inaugural recipient of a Goodnight Early Career Innovator Award, receiving funding from the 2022 Chancellor’s Innovation Fund (CIF) to develop and commercialize the Arti-Chem: Self-Driven Quantum Dot Synthesizer, which is a device he and his colleagues invented, and he received a nearly $1.5 million grant through the University of North Carolina’s Research Opportunities Initiative (UNC ROI).
From outside the University, Prof. Abolhasani has received numerous other awards and fellowships including a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, an ACS-PRF Doctoral New Investigator Award, and AIChE Futures, and Emerging Investigator recognitions from the journals Lab on a Chip, Reaction Chemistry & Engineering, and Journal of Flow Chemistry. He was also selected as a member of the 2020 class of AIChE 35 Under 35 award winners. The award honors “engineers under the age of 35 who have made significant contributions to the Institute and to the chemical engineering profession.”
