Alum Dr. Donald (“Don”) R. Paul and his wife, Barbara W. Paul, have established the Donald Paul CBE Scholarship with an endowed gift of $125,000 to the department. The need-based scholarship is for undergraduate students, preferably residents of eastern NC, who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Awards will be for one academic year and may be renewable.

A native of Yeatesville, NC, Dr. Paul earned his B.S. ChE degree with High Honors from our department in 1961. He earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from The University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1963 and 1965, respectively.

Following a 2-year stint at Chemstrand Research Center, Inc., the first corporate resident of the Research Triangle Park, Dr. Paul joined the (now) McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he’s a professor and the Ernest Cockrell, Sr. Chair in Engineering.

In 2017, the McKetta Department hosted a Symposium & Celebration to commemorate Professor Paul’s 50-year academic career. A portion of the Symposium citation reads:

“Paul is a legend in the field of polymer engineering and science, with a strong focus on fundamental membrane science, based not only on the quantity of contributions to the field but also for the profound quality and insight that he has brought to the field.

“Paul is among the most cited scientists in the world. His work in polymer engineering and science has been cited more than 42,000 times according to Web of Science and his h-index is 100.  Many of the citations are to papers that are classics in their field.

“As a result of making some of the key discoveries in several areas of polymer science and technology, Paul has received virtually every possible award and honor in the field of polymer and membrane science, including election to the National Academy of Engineering, receipt of the Alan S. Michaels Award for Innovation in Membrane Science and Technology from the North American Membrane Society, receipt of the Herman F. Mark Polymer Chemistry Award, the Applied Polymer Science Award, and the E.V. Murphree Award from the American Chemical Society, and receipt of the William H. Walker Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineering.

“He has been elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Society of Plastics Engineers, the Materials Research Society, and the American Chemical Society (plus the Divisions of Polymeric Materials; Science and Engineering and Polymer Chemistry).”

Other donors are invited to add contributions to the Paul Scholarship with the understanding that their donations will be subject to the terms of the original agreement between Dr. and Mrs. Paul and the NC State Engineering Foundation. Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Russ O’Dell at russ_odell@ncsu.edu.

The Department deeply appreciates this generous gift of support from Professor Paul and Mrs. Paul.
