Michael Bowen, Jayme Currie, Emily Heckard, Sean Kauder and Lucas Wylie Garner Awards

The semester is still young but several CBE undergraduates have already distinguished themselves with awards and honors…

Michael Bowen is one of 52 recipients of an Astronaut Scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF). The ASF was created in 1984 by several persons with strong ties to the U.S. manned space program including the (then) six surviving Mercury 7 astronauts (Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Walter Schirra, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton) and Betty Grissom (widow of the seventh astronaut, Virgil “Gus” Grissom). According to the ASF, “Astronaut Scholars are among the best and brightest minds in STEM who show initiative, creativity, and excellence in their chosen field.”

Jayme Currie received the AIChE John J. McKetta Undergraduate Scholarship Award. The scholarship is awarded to junior or senior student members of AICHE who are planning a career in the chemical engineering process industries. Recipients must have demonstrated leadership or activity in either their school’s AICHE student chapter or other university sponsored campus activities.

Emily Heckard received the AIChE Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award. The Award is presented to one active AIChE undergraduate student member in each student chapter who has attained the highest scholastic grade-point average during his/her freshman and sophomore years, on recommendation of the Student Chapter Advisor.

Sean Kauder received the AIChE Freshman Recognition Award. The Award is presented to “one active AIChE undergraduate student member in each student chapter who has been the most active in their student chapter during his/her freshman year, on recommendation of the Student Chapter Advisor.”

Lucas Wylie received the AIChE Donald F. & Mildred Topp Othmer Scholarship Award. Othmer Scholarships “are awarded to chemical engineering students for their outstanding academic achievement and involvement in student chapter activities.”

Finally, the AIChE student chapter has earned the 2018-2019 AIChE Outstanding Student Chapter Award. This marks the chapter’s 24th Outstanding Student Chapter Award (marking the 21st award in the past 23 years). Kudos to the 2018-19 Executive Board: Lucas Wylie, Jayme Currie, Joseph Holder, Elton Luong, Bradley Schmidt, and Rosalynn Phan for your hard work and leadership in service to the chapter.
